During the period 2018 - 2020. Joseph Auer made two, (3 month each), trips to Malaysia that included visits to Western Australia and the southern Thailand province of Narathiwat. The trips were part of an ongoing endeavour to record the various localised/local scenes, people, environments and organisations/collectives throughout Asia (outside of Japan and South Korea focused narratives), that have built up unique electronic musics (and music scenes), centred around localised cultural ritualised sensibilities.
In both southern Thailand and Malaysia he has been able to accumulate a large collection of research, interviews, meetings and environmental recordings that piece together the environment in which Malaysia has tried (and at points succeeded), in developing new forms of hybridised electronic musics ranging from the Avant-garde to Pop to Rock to Funkot to rare forms of electronic Musik Islami (incl. Musik gambus). The research formed the basis of the 2020 Nusantara.00X release. The research work is still ongoing and a follow-up to Nusantara.00X is also ongoing.
